You need to do a clean installation of XP which will erase all of your data (or you could dual boot Vista and XP see the end of my answer)
I have done this on my laptop and it was VERY difficult but I got it to work.
Here is the list of XP hardware drivers that you need:
Motherboard chipset
Coprocessor
LAN
Video
WLAN (wireless)
MS UAA
Audio
Modem
Card Reader
Web Cam (if needed)
You may need Net.framework 2.0 to get some drivers to work.
Also some drivers may need to be manually installed as opposed to using the installer (exe).
It literally took me several days to get everything to work.

depends on your computer. many that are coming out now adays are very difficult to go from vista to xp. research your computer on google and see what other people have done.
I know that you can buy XP and install it, instead of having Vista. As far as I know it won't lock the computer the only thing that will be different is that you have XP instead of Vista!
I hate vista and our computer has it, we were unable to but I think on some computers you can put XP on but you have to have the certain %26quot;drivers%26quot; for XP.
You would need to get an a copy of XP of somebody if you don't already have one, uninstall Vista and install XP.
What you want to do is completely stupid.Replace a brand new operating system with one that is dying? Why, because the start button on vista is round and it does not say %26quot;start%26quot;?Everything new takes time to get familiar with.
Format your hard drive and install XP like installing a new OS.
But I prefer Vista over XP anyday.

I would go straight to www.hp.com and look for technical assistance. It might have something to do with a system restore? I have Windows XP and for some reason the menu looks like the classic windows menu. Everything that the Windows XP window has is there like the pictures next to the items on the start menu but things like the color of the menu and the way the start button look is wrong. The Start button is just a gray/off white color and its a like a rectangle shape (classic windows shape). Does anyone know how to get it back to the Windows XP shape, that green %26quot;bubble%26quot;? I right clicked on the start button/properties and Start Menu is selected so everything is right but the task bar and start button are gray/off white, its not blue like its suppose to be. Then there is the security, because windows didn't start introducing their security setting to default until vista came out, your computer will be much more vulnerable to virus attacks then vista ever was.

Thirdly, this is a destructive opertation. If you get it wrong you have wiped your new laptop out and have no OS on the laptop.
So, in summary... it's fairly easy provided you check beforehand and get the drivers onto a CD disk or a USB stick drive. But if you're not confident there *is* a risk to the process. It's a lot less risk if you leave the Vista restore partitiion / restore CD available so you can always go back to Vista if it all goes horribly wrong.
Alternatively, can you make vista look like XP? I have never used Vista, but I always make XP look like Win2k as it saves a lot of processing power.

I might be wrong about this, but I think that the cheapest one is about $99.00, and the price goes up depending on which one that you get. I'm not sure what all is involved with installing it to your computer, but I'm sure that it is pretty simple. I'm guessing it is installed just like any other program. You will also be able to contact Microsoft if you have any problems or questions! hope this helps a little! :-)

So today I was browsing for new Skins for my computer. I came across some on Alienware which I liked. But it asked me to download there program first to get the free skins. This was all on Alienware.Com so I know it wasnt fake or viruses. So I downloaded it and I changed some skins. But For some reason everything changed except the MENU BAR? The menu bar that opens from START.
So I deleted the program and completely got it out of my computer through control panel, etc. Then I went to change my menu bar to the newer style XP look, not the classic one. An it all changed to silver and the start button is green, but the menu bar is still not changing?
The menu bar looks like the old windows classic, the only difference is, it says: WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL running up the side of the bar (left side). An the bar has a strip of fading dark blue into black which is where the WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL is written in white on the strip.
Any ideas how I can get the NEWER style back? Thanks!

You simply go to a website that you can download linux from. I would suggest ubuntu's website. Ubuntu is one of the easiest to use Linux distros. You then burn your download to a CD. Put the CD in your computer, restart computer, then Ubuntu Live CD will load. How do i change my windows xp to a linux operating system.?
There are of course several ways to do this. One of the better ways (because it preserves your XP install) is by downloading Ubuntu Linux.
Once you have downloaded it (google Ubuntu and download a desktop CD install), simply boot your PC from your CD-ROM. You can choose from several options, including running Ubuntu solely off the CD (no changes to your hard drive) and most importantly you can choose to install Ubuntu along side Windows XP and dual boot!
If you have enough space on your hard drive Ubuntu will resize your Windows partition so that you have enough space to install Ubuntu. It will also setup a boot loader so you can choose which operating system you'd like to boot each time you start your PC.
You cannot change your Windows XP to Linux, that is not possible.
You can however have a dual boot system, Windows XP and some version of Linux. Yhere are many Linux based operating systems, so know which particular one you want before setting this up.
Or, your other option is to delete Windows XP and run just Linux.
Note: Linux is not as user friendly as Windows, but it is far more secure, in terms it is very hard for a hacker to hack your system, also virus, spyware and malware are almost nonexsistent.
Also, the support base is better for Windows than Linux, but Linux is getting better over time, and when Vista was some many problems, support for Linux took a huge boost.
ubuntu is good, but I've been having better luck with Slackware based distros.

You simply go to a website that you can download linux from. I would suggest ubuntu's website. Ubuntu is one of the easiest to use Linux distros. You then burn your download to a CD. Put the CD in your computer, restart computer, then Ubuntu Live CD will load. Then you have the option from the Live CD to install in to your computer, and it will take you through the steps, if you want to dual-boot and leave xp, or if you want to do a full installation, which removes everything on your hard drive.
