Changing windows xp pro password?

I was helping someone change their windows xp professional password. I got the password changed from control pannel%26gt;user accounts. To test the password, the computer was shut off and restarted. Now the computer goes to a microsoft DOS state and asks for the password. None of the passwords seem to work. Nothing can be entered in the password field. Has this happened to you? if yes please tell me how to log on to windows. Since im not with the person i cannot check it out myself, I have explained everything i was told. Please help

It sounds like his computer was infected with something and it only reacted when the password was changed.

You may try reaching Safe mode to remove the password and see if that helps. (tap/hold F8 at boot to reach safe mode)

I would also recommend that the person attach their drive to another computer and remove any files they want to keep as he/she may need to reformat the drive (as a last resort).

Ok, lets i think you should try changing the login password again or atleast for now disabling it.

Try this, shut it down again, and before it begins to load anything hold down the F8 key until it shows a prompt to choose safe mode. enter safe mode. Hopefully it should load up to the welcome screen, while here login to your account normally. if any password won't work than try the administrator account (hopefully this account isn't password protected). If it logs in do the same thing you did before, go to control panel%26gt;user accounts%26gt;and change or disable password. than shut down properly and restart again. Good Luck!
All Windows XP and 2000 machines have an Administrator account which has full access to your friends computer. This account is created during the installation of the operating system and is meant to be used for troubleshooting purposes. By default the Administrator account is not password protected.

Click Start, click Turn Off Computer, and then click Restart.

After the computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), press F8, and then click Safe mode| Login as Administrator | Control Panel | User Accounts | Create a %26quot;new%26quot; Account for your friend (with Admin rights) or click create a password for the current Admin. account | Type a password for the account, and then retype the password to confirm it.

Type a hint to help you remember the password in the event that you forget it.

Click Create Password

NOTE: If you need to create a new User Account, you must use a new name (i.e. originally Bill Smith - now should be B. Smith or William Smith) You can also go back and delete the corrupt account which you first created.
